If every evening ends in nagging, tears, or a standoff, the problem usually isn't laziness — it's that homework has become a power struggle, and power struggles have no winners. The fix is structural, not motivational.
By evening, a school-age child has spent six hours holding it together for teachers. The self-control tank is empty, and you're asking for one more withdrawal — right when they most need connection and autonomy. Resistance is the predictable output of that math.
The battle also persists because it works: fighting about homework delays homework, and negative attention is still attention. Any fix has to make the fight less useful than the work.
Anchor homework to a consistent slot that follows food and movement — snack, twenty minutes of real physical play, then work. Not “right after school” (empty tank) and not “after dinner” (melting brain). Same slot daily, so the routine gives the order instead of you.
Shift ownership visibly: they choose the order of assignments, the workspace, and when the timed break lands. You set the frame — screens off until it's done, you're available for help but not seated as warden. When they stall, the consequence is the routine's (“screens unlock when homework's done”), delivered once, boringly, without a lecture. Boring is the secret ingredient: fights need an audience.
A child who fights homework but does fine at school is in a power struggle. A child who melts down at home and struggles at school may be signaling an attention issue, a learning difference like dyslexia, or anxiety that deserves a real evaluation. Ask the teacher one question: “Does the work take other kids this long?” The answer tells you which problem you're solving.
