Therapy for adult children caring for an aging parent in Iowa

Your parent may be on the farm or in the small town they’ve lived in for fifty years, and you may be the one who lives closest. That often means you’re the one who gets the call.

I’m Tammy Gold, licensed in Iowa as an independent-level social worker (LISW #141693). I’ve worked directly with families across the country for more than 20 years, including on the hard decisions around a parent’s care.

Online sessions for adults located in California, New Jersey, Oregon, Maine or Iowa. Alma checks your specific plan before you book.

Caregiving across a rural state

In much of Iowa, services thin out quickly beyond the bigger towns. A parent who wants to stay home may be miles from the nearest clinic, with winter roads in between.

Iowa’s Area Agencies on Aging can help you find services. LifeLong Links, the state’s aging and disability resource network, is 1-866-468-7887. Therapy helps with the part they can’t: the guilt, the family dynamics, and the decisions.

You might be looking for help with

This is individual psychotherapy with a licensed clinician. It isn’t coaching. Couples and family sessions are a different format that insurance may treat differently, so ask before you book if you’re interested in a joint session.

What we might work on

How sessions work

Sessions combine a standard clinical assessment with the Care Map Method™, the framework I use to look at your sleep and health, your feelings, your relationships and your daily demands, then build one practical change at a time. More about therapy in Iowa.

TRY THIS

One job per sibling

List every recurring task your parent needs: medications, bills, appointments, groceries, check-in calls. Next to each, write one sibling’s name. Siblings who live far away can still own the bills or the weekly calls. Send the list and ask each person to confirm theirs.

Sessions, licenses and insurance

Sessions are online by video for adults who are physically located in Iowa, or another state where I’m licensed, during each session. I’m licensed in Iowa (LISW #141693), and also in California, New Jersey, Oregon and Maine.

Through Alma, I’m in network with Aetna, Cigna, Carelon, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and Optum plans including UnitedHealthcare, Oscar and Oxford. Coverage depends on your specific plan, not only the insurance company’s name. Alma checks it before your first session, including any copay or deductible, and handles the billing. Questions people ask

Can therapy help if my parent won’t accept help?

Yes. We work on what you can control: how you raise it, what you say, what limits you set, and what to do if things become unsafe.

Where can I find services for my parent in Iowa?

LifeLong Links (1-866-468-7887) connects you to Iowa’s Area Agencies on Aging. The national Eldercare Locator is 1-800-677-1116.

Do you help choose home care or a facility?

In therapy we work on the decision and what makes it hard. Hands-on help evaluating caregivers or agencies is Care Map coaching, a separate private-pay service.

My parent is in Iowa but I’m not. Can I see you?

Only while you’re physically in a state where I’m licensed: California, New Jersey, Oregon, Maine or Iowa.

Do you take my insurance?

I see clients through Alma, and through Alma I’m in network with Aetna, Cigna, Carelon, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and Optum plans including UnitedHealthcare, Oscar and Oxford. Coverage still depends on your specific plan. Alma checks it before your first appointment, including any copay or deductible. Please share plan and health details through Alma’s secure intake, not by text or email.

Do I need to be in Iowa for sessions?

Yes, or in another state where I’m licensed. Sessions are online by video, and you need to be physically in Iowa, California, New Jersey, Oregon or Maine during each one. If you’ll be traveling, tell me ahead of time so we can plan around it.
