Au pair placements succeed or fail in the first month

You're not hiring an employee — you're integrating a young adult from another country into your home for a year. That's a different problem than hiring a nanny, and it needs a different plan.

Guidance from the therapist who wrote the Penguin book on hiring a nanny

Tammy Gold, LCSW, spent years matching families with nannies before writing Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer (Penguin). Today she works beside families, and their agencies, as a neutral expert: defining the job, interviewing candidates, checking references and setting up the first 30 days.

What makes au pair placements different

An au pair is simultaneously a caregiver, a cultural exchange participant, and a person living far from home for the first time. Program rules cap hours and duties, homesickness is predictable, and the family's household becomes the workplace — all at once.

Most placements that fail don't fail on childcare skill. They fail on unclear expectations, no plan for the adjustment period, and no structure for raising problems before they become resentment.

What we work through

How a Care Map engagement works

01 · MAP

A 60-minute session that maps your whole situation across all four BESE domains — what you actually need, not what you think you should want.

02 · MATCH

Selecting the right person, program, or setting against those needs — with the screening and interview structure to evaluate candidates properly.

03 · MERGE

Onboarding: expectations, communication, routines, and the first-thirty-days plan that decides whether it lasts.

04 · MANAGE

Check-ins as the arrangement settles, plus the tools to handle problems before they become departures.

Some families need only the first stage. Others want all four, or ongoing support through a placement. Scope is set on the intro call.

A note on standards

Tammy has been retained as an expert in au pair litigation, which means the guidance here is grounded in what happens when placements go badly wrong — sponsor duties, host family supervision obligations, and the standards courts examine.

Map Before You Act™

Want help with your specific situation?

General guidance only goes so far when it's your family, your schedule, and this particular caregiver. A Care Map call maps what your household actually needs, then builds the screening, matching, or repair plan around it.
