Online therapy for men: stress, anger and relationships

A lot of men wait until something breaks: a relationship, their health, their temper, their sleep. You may be used to handling things on your own, and this time it isn’t working.

I’m Tammy Gold, a licensed clinical social worker. Therapy with me is practical. We figure out what’s going on, then work on specific things you can do differently at home and at work.

Online sessions for adults located in California, New Jersey, Oregon or Maine. Alma checks your specific plan before you book.

Who this is for

This page is for adult men dealing with stress, irritability, a strained relationship, fatherhood or a big change, including men who have never been to therapy.

You might notice that:

This is individual psychotherapy with a licensed clinician. It isn’t coaching. Couples and family sessions are a different format that insurance may treat differently, so ask before you book if you’re interested in a joint session.

If you need help now: If drinking or drugs have become hard to control, tell me. SAMHSA’s National Helpline, 1-800-662-4357, offers free, confidential referrals any time. If you feel unsafe with yourself or someone else, call 911 or 988. If there’s violence at home, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233.

What we might work on

How the Care Map Method™ shapes our sessions

The Care Map Method™ is the framework I use to organize our work, alongside a standard clinical assessment. It isn’t a separate tested treatment. It keeps four kinds of needs in view:

BIOLOGICAL

Sleep, exercise, drinking, health and how stress shows up physically.

EMOTIONAL

Anger, worry, sadness and what sits under them.

SOCIAL

Your partner, your kids, your friends, and whether you have anyone to talk to.

ENVIRONMENTAL

Work, money, home and time.

Then we work in four steps:

  1. Map the emotion and trigger. We take one recent flash point and break it down: what happened, what you felt in your body, what you did.
  2. Match the need with a strategy. We name what you needed, such as respect, rest or a break, and pick a strategy that fits, like a time-out signal.
  3. Merge the strategy into daily life. We set it up at home: what you’ll say, when you’ll step away, when you’ll come back.
  4. Manage communication and responses. We rehearse the conversation you’ve been avoiding, then review the week and adjust.
TRY THIS

The 20-minute time-out

When you feel your temper rising, use a short line you’ve agreed on in advance, such as “I need twenty minutes. I’ll be back.” Leave the room. Walk, shower or do something physical, not something that keeps you stewing. Then come back when you said you would. Returning on time is what makes a time-out work.

How we’ll look at progress

We’ll choose markers that fit you, such as:

We check these every few sessions and change the plan if something isn’t helping. I can’t promise a particular result; we focus on what is in your hands.

Sessions, licenses and insurance

Sessions are online by video for adults who are physically located in California, New Jersey, Oregon or Maine during each session. Licenses: California LCSW #136364; New Jersey LCSW #44SC05528100; Oregon LCSW #L16530; Maine LCSW #LC26593.

Through Alma, I’m in network with Aetna, Cigna, Carelon, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and Optum plans including UnitedHealthcare, Oscar and Oxford. Coverage depends on your specific plan, not only the insurance company’s name. Alma checks it before your first session, including any copay or deductible, and handles the billing. I’m a licensed clinical social worker (California LCSW #136364; New Jersey LCSW #44SC05528100; Oregon LCSW #L16530; Maine LCSW #LC26593) and the founder of the Care Map Method™. I’ve worked directly with families for more than 20 years. Questions people ask

I’ve never done therapy. What happens?

We talk about what’s bringing you in, your background and your goals. I’ll ask practical questions, and you leave the first session with one thing to try.

Is it okay to see a woman therapist?

Many men find it helpful, especially for relationship questions. What matters most is whether you can be straight with the person you’re talking to. If it isn’t a fit, I’ll help you find someone who is.

Will we just talk about feelings?

We’ll talk about what’s going on, feelings included, because they drive what you do. But the focus is on what you’ll do differently, and every session ends with something specific.

Can my partner join a session?

This is individual therapy for you. A partner sometimes joins a session with your agreement; ask before you book, since insurance may treat joint sessions differently.

Do you take my insurance?

I see clients through Alma, and through Alma I’m in network with Aetna, Cigna, Carelon, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and Optum plans including UnitedHealthcare, Oscar and Oxford. Coverage still depends on your specific plan. Alma checks it before your first appointment, including any copay or deductible. Please share plan and health details through Alma’s secure intake, not by text or email.

Where do I need to be during sessions?

Sessions are online by video, and you need to be physically in California, New Jersey, Oregon or Maine during each one. Your insurance plan can come from another state; what matters for licensing is where you are during the session. Alma checks whether your plan covers sessions with me.
