Therapy for adult children caring for an aging parent in Maine

Maine has the oldest population of any state, which means a lot of Mainers are doing what you’re doing: checking on a parent, driving them to appointments, worrying about the stairs and the winter, and wondering how long this can go on.

I’m Tammy Gold, a licensed clinical social worker in Maine (LCSW #LC26593). I’ve worked directly with families across the country for more than 20 years, including on the hard decisions around a parent’s care.

Online sessions for adults located in California, New Jersey, Oregon, Maine or Iowa. Alma checks your specific plan before you book.

Caregiving, Maine style

Parents in Maine often want to stay in the house they’ve lived in for decades, sometimes miles from the nearest neighbor or hospital. Winter makes every worry bigger: the driveway, the woodstove, a fall with no one around.

Many adult children are the one sibling who stayed, while brothers and sisters live out of state. That arrangement can work, but it often leaves one person carrying most of the load, and the resentment that comes with it.

This is individual psychotherapy with a licensed clinician. It isn’t coaching. Couples and family sessions are a different format that insurance may treat differently, so ask before you book if you’re interested in a joint session.

What we might work on

How sessions work

Sessions combine a standard clinical assessment with the Care Map Method™, the framework I use to look at your sleep and health, your feelings, your relationships and your daily demands, then build one practical change at a time. More about therapy in Maine.

TRY THIS

Write the winter plan now

Before the first big storm, write down who checks on your parent if the power goes out, who clears the driveway, and who takes them to appointments if you can’t. Share it with your siblings and ask each one to own one line. A shared plan beats one person on call for everything.

Sessions, licenses and insurance

Sessions are online by video for adults who are physically located in Maine, or another state where I’m licensed, during each session. I’m licensed in Maine (LCSW #LC26593), and also in California, New Jersey, Oregon and Iowa.

Through Alma, I’m in network with Aetna, Cigna, Carelon, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and Optum plans including UnitedHealthcare, Oscar and Oxford. Coverage depends on your specific plan, not only the insurance company’s name. Alma checks it before your first session, including any copay or deductible, and handles the billing. Questions people ask

Can therapy help if my parent won’t accept help?

Yes. We work on what you can control: how you raise it, what you say, what limits you set, and what you do if things become unsafe.

Where can I find services for my parent in Maine?

Maine’s Area Agencies on Aging help with services and planning; call the statewide line, 1-877-353-3771, and choose your county. The national Eldercare Locator is 1-800-677-1116.

Do you help with choosing home care or a facility?

In therapy we work on the decision and what makes it hard. Hands-on help evaluating caregivers or agencies is Care Map coaching, a separate private-pay service.

My parent lives in Maine but I don’t. Can I see you?

Only while you’re physically in a state where I’m licensed: California, New Jersey, Oregon, Maine or Iowa.

Do you take my insurance?

I see clients through Alma, and through Alma I’m in network with Aetna, Cigna, Carelon, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and Optum plans including UnitedHealthcare, Oscar and Oxford. Coverage still depends on your specific plan. Alma checks it before your first appointment, including any copay or deductible. Please share plan and health details through Alma’s secure intake, not by text or email.

Do I need to be in Maine for sessions?

Yes, or in another state where I’m licensed. Sessions are online by video, and you need to be physically in Maine, California, New Jersey, Oregon or Iowa during each one. If you’ll be traveling, tell me ahead of time so we can plan around it.
