CARE MAP METHOD™
Childcare · The MATCH Stage

Interview for judgment, not charm

Anyone can be warm for forty-five minutes. The right questions show you how a candidate thinks when things don't go to plan — which is the job.

The interview problem

Most nanny interviews are pleasant conversations that predict almost nothing. The candidate says they love children, you describe the schedule, everyone smiles. Then real life arrives: a tantrum in a parking lot, a fever decision at 2pm, a misunderstanding about screen time.

Good interviews are built backwards from those moments. They put the candidate in the situations your family will actually generate — and watch how they reason.

What families commonly get wrong

Asking questions with obvious right answers

“Do you think safety is important?” teaches you nothing. “Walk me through your first hour alone with my kids” teaches you plenty.

Using one generic question list

The best questions come from your child's specific needs — a sensitive sleeper, a bold climber, a slow-to-warm toddler each demand different instincts.

Ignoring how they talk about past families

Candidates who blame every previous employer will eventually describe you the same way. How someone narrates conflict is data.

What to ask — and what to listen for

Scenario questions

“The baby has cried for twenty minutes and nothing works. What do you do?” Listen for a sequence, calm, and when they'd call you. There's no perfect answer — there's organized thinking or there isn't.

Judgment and safety

Pose a real gray area: a fever at pickup time, a stranger at the door, a park injury. You're listening for where their line sits and whether communication with you is part of their instinct.

Repair and feedback

“Tell me about a time a parent corrected you. What happened next?” The answer predicts every hard conversation you'll ever have with this person.

Their questions for you

Strong candidates interview you back — about routines, values, discipline, communication. Few or no questions is its own signal.

How the Care Map Method™ approaches this

Interview questions work when they're anchored to a map of your child's needs:

BiologicalAsk about sleep routines, feeding, allergies, physical safety
EmotionalProbe soothing, tantrums, separation, connection style
SocialExplore sibling dynamics, play, language, boundaries with friends
EnvironmentalCover your home's rules, rhythms, pets, screens, neighborhood

Map first, then interview. Candidates stop blurring together because you're finally measuring them against the same clear standard.

Questions families ask

How many candidates should I interview?

Screen many, interview few. Ten-minute screening calls can narrow a long list to two to four serious in-person interviews.

What's the biggest interview red flag?

Vagueness under follow-up. Strong candidates get more specific when you dig; weak ones get more general. Blame-heavy stories about past families are a close second.

Should my child be present?

Not for the first interview — you need the candidate's full reasoning attention. The trial day is where you watch them together.

What about background checks?

Always, and the system covers verification — but checks confirm the past. Interviews and trials predict the future. You need both.

Do these questions work for au pairs or sitters?

The judgment and scenario framework transfers well; the system is built around ongoing in-home care where the stakes and depth are highest.

Map Before You Act™

Want help with your specific situation?

General guidance only goes so far when it's your family, your schedule, and this particular caregiver. A Care Map call maps what your household actually needs, then builds the screening, matching, or repair plan around it.
