Define the Job

Nanny job description: what to include

The most common hiring mistake happens before the search starts: families look for a person before deciding what the job actually is. A clear job description fixes that — and attracts the right candidates.

Before you hire: the Family Needs Assessment™

The four parts of a strong job description

  1. The physical job — days, hours, start date, live-in or live-out, and whether driving is required
  2. The duties — exactly what the work includes: meals, naps, school runs, activities, children's laundry, light tidying
  3. The emotional job — the kind of person your child needs: calm and steady, high-energy, nurturing, structured
  4. Musts, pluses, and deal-breakers — named before you meet anyone, so a charming interview can't talk you past them

Guidance from the therapist who wrote the Penguin book on hiring a nanny

Tammy Gold, LCSW, spent years matching families with nannies before writing Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer (Penguin). Today she works beside families, and their agencies, as a neutral expert: defining the job, interviewing candidates, checking references and setting up the first 30 days.

Duties: be specific, not general

“Help around the house” causes more conflict than any other phrase in childcare. Write what you mean: “Tidy the playroom and children's rooms, run and fold the children's laundry, and prepare their meals.” Anything not on the list is a conversation, not an assumption.

Then carry the same list into your work agreement so the job you advertised is the job you hired for.
