Screening a Nanny

Nanny screening: the whole process, in order

No single step tells you whether a nanny is right. Screening works as layers — each one catches what the others miss.

The five layers of screening

  1. Phone screen — filters for basic fit and communication in 15 minutes. Phone questions
  2. References — done before the interview, with targeted questions. Reference questions
  3. Interview — values, scenarios, and practical fit. How to interview
  4. Background check — with written consent, through a reputable provider. Background checks
  5. Trial days — the only layer that shows real care. Trial day

Why the order matters

Each layer should inform the next. References shape your interview questions; the interview tells you what to watch for during the trial. Skipping a layer, or doing them out of order, is where most screening fails — usually because a strong first impression made the later steps feel like formalities.

Guidance from the therapist who wrote the Penguin book on hiring a nanny

Tammy Gold, LCSW, spent years matching families with nannies before writing Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer (Penguin). Today she works beside families, and their agencies, as a neutral expert: defining the job, interviewing candidates, checking references and setting up the first 30 days.
