Screening a Nanny

Nanny reference check questions that get real answers

“Was she good?” gets you “she was great” every time. The value of a reference call comes entirely from how specific your questions are.

Guidance from the therapist who wrote the Penguin book on hiring a nanny

Tammy Gold, LCSW, spent years matching families with nannies before writing Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer (Penguin). Today she works beside families, and their agencies, as a neutral expert: defining the job, interviewing candidates, checking references and setting up the first 30 days.

Ask these instead

  1. “How would you describe her?”
  2. “What exactly did she do all day?”
  3. “How did she respond when a child was upset? Give me a specific example.”
  4. “My child is sensitive and slow to warm. How do you think she'd do?”
  5. “Did you ever see her when something went wrong? What did she do?”
  6. “What did she do when she disagreed with something you asked?”
  7. “What kind of family would not be a good fit for her?”
  8. “If you moved to a new city, would you try to bring her with you?”

What to listen for

Hesitation before answering. General answers when you asked for specifics. Praise that's all about reliability and never about the children. The last question is the most revealing on the list — enthusiasm or a pause both tell you a great deal.

Call references before the interview, and make sure at least two are former employers rather than friends or family.
